CPJ and 14 Organizations Urge Kenyan Authorities to Accelerate Investigations into the Murder of Journalist Arshad Sharif

CPJ, alongside 14 human rights organizations and press associations, jointly released a statement on Tuesday, May 2nd, urging Kenyan authorities to expedite their investigations into the murder of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif and to ensure accountability through a transparent judicial process.

According to Kenyan police reports from October 2022, Sharif was allegedly shot and killed by an officer in Kajiado County, near Nairobi, under the claim of “mistaken identity.” However, Pakistani investigators have since raised doubts about this narrative, highlighting inconsistencies and suggesting possible involvement of individuals across Kenya, Dubai, and Pakistan in Sharif’s assassination.

The statement underscores that the failure of Kenyan authorities to provide a credible explanation for Sharif’s death tarnishes the country’s international reputation and raises concerns regarding the safety of the significant number of international journalists residing in Kenya.
